Halo monitor with in vacuum APD

Realization

  • New printed circuit board arrived 9/28/06 at UIUC
  • After John drilled screw slits, shipped to Urs Greuter 9/30/06 (4 drilled, 4 original boards)
  • Asked PSI electronics to assemble 3 boards, Alexey to test them with APD
  • After that is done, ship to UIUC for complete assembly and test with scintillators
  • Two 10x100x0.5 mm3 and two 10x100x1 mm3 ready at PSI (Peter W.)

Halo monitor with PMs outside of vacuum

This is an extension of our existing halo counters. The geometry is changed that the scinitllators point in beam direction. We don't want to destroy the existing counters. We could use either the sliding or the simpler fixed feedthrough design. The schematic drawing is for the fixed design. Probably the sliding design would be preferable for turning the counter. Firstly, we have a good chance to turn without breaking the vacuum. Second, we can move the counter to the pipe center to make the turn. Thus the counters could be longer in beam direction, helping the z integration.

Please study those carefully and send correction to Peter W. and myself. Peter has to place the orders tomorrow and I was in a rush to design all that. Given the short time left, any mistake could cost us this important measurement.

The pictures show the two detector assemble in different positions.

Here are the construction drawings both for PSI and UIUC. For PSI Mr Ruettimann's adapted design still needs to be included. For UIUC:

  • The light guides are only sketched.
  • We need to decide on a PM tube and prepare mounting and strain relief.
  • Two positioning rings with setscrews for the alu lightguide pipe have to be made. If Peter W can still order that at PSI, fine, otherwise we need to prepare those.

Finally, I include the current Inventor files.

Tasks

  • Peter Winter: Let us discuss the project. The PSI tasks would be:
    • Weld the two NW40 to a suitable beam pipe
    • Glue two plexiglass cyclinders into Alu pipe, i.e. carbon copy light guide through sliding feedthrough
    • Mill one or two sliding feedthroughs, preferentially with NW40 flanges.

  • UIUC
    • Suitable detectors (light guide and 1mm scintillators), John
    • Mounts on MuCap tubes or MuLan tubes (instead of CERN base)?
    • Test: Dave

Hardware info

Brief last triplet study.

The effect of the relative changes of the last triplet is calculated with transport last_trip.pdf. This should give some guidance for defocussing the beam during halo studies. Please notice that the +0% settings correspond to the direct translation of the current channel settings to magnetic field values. Thus TRANSPORT does not agree fully with the quantitative settings. Accordingly one should only use the relative changes to estimate the sensitivity of defocussing, but rely on the empirical rates in the halo counters to select a reasonable detuning.
