CVS - Getting started

Besides the eLog, we have migrated the CVS from the Illinois NPL server over to the Washington system. Please note, that we will have disabled the CVS on the Illinois server from now on to have only one working CVS at a time. The CVS contains e.g. analysis software, progress reports etc. for MuCap. Here is the information on how to get started with the CVS:

  1. The new location is:
    • For Mucap: muon.npl.washington.edu:/home/cvs/mucap/cvsroot/
    • For Musun: muon.npl.washington.edu:/home/cvs/musun/cvsroot/
  2. For security reasons, we don't have the common user 'mucap' anymore. In the future, you need your own login to the Washington server. If you do need one, please send an email to one of the admins (peter.winter@psi.ch, mhmurray@uw.edu) and let him know:
    • your name
    • your preferred login name
    • point out that you need access to CVS (tell the admin to "usertool groupmod -m username cvs")
  3. He will then setup an account with the initial password being the usual MuCap password. You should then change it to your personal one of your choice.
  4. You also have to set the variable CVS_RSH in your preferred shell (e.g. export CVS_RSH=ssh in the .bashrc).

If you have problems in getting the CVS to work with this new system, please check the troubleshooting hints below or send an email to one of the Illinois people.

Updating an existing repository for the new CVS server location

If you happen to have a repository checked out from the old Berkeley server and you want to keep it, you have to update your local copy to the new repository/server information. You can find a tool do that at the webpage.

So far the only problem experienced was a denial of access due to the fact that the permissions for your account weren't set correctly. The output when accessing CVS looked like (this is still on the NPL Illinois server, so the home directory of CVS was /site/npl/mucap/cvsroot/ instead of the new one /home/cvs/mucap/cvsroot/:

cvs checkout: warning: cannot write to history file /site/npl/mucap/cvsroot/CVSROOT/history: Permission denied
cvs checkout: Updating mu
cvs checkout: failed to create lock directory for `/site/npl/mucap/cvsroot/mu' (/site/npl/mucap/cvsroot/mu/#cvs.lock): Permission denied
cvs checkout: failed to obtain dir lock in repository `/site/npl/mucap/cvsroot/mu'
cvs [checkout aborted]: read lock failed - giving up

If that occurs when you first try to access CVS, please send an email to David Webber and ask him to give you CVS access permissions. Soon after that you should be able to download repositories.
