Shift Duties - MuSun Run 3 DRAFT

Overview

The primary responsibility of the shift crew is to maintain safe experimental conditions and take efficient and high quality data.
The shift crew can leave the experimental barrack temporarely.

Main routine tasks:

  • Familiarize yourself with the manuals (links here)
  • Read the recent elogs and the <nop>ShiftCheckList_R un3.xls (where).
  • Follow measurement plan (verbal, white board or from log book)
  • Make sure that DAQ s running. This is monitored on the Midas Webpage.
  • Make sure that when runs are manually started, all the information on the info page is correctly updated

Main monitoring tasks:

In addition to the MIDAS status page you should monitor the experimental equipment via

  • monitor cryo TPC and CHUPS, it is essential for the safe operation of the experiment.
    • Basic Monitoring
      • cold head ~31K
    • Advanced documentation (insert link)
  • Once per shift fill out the checklist on zurban:/home/l_data/Desktop/Checklists, see desktop:5 on zurban.
  • observe online display:
    • Main spectra:
  • check HV and currents of chambers (Zurban desktop:1)
  • observe visual scalers

1 proton current Proton accelerator beam current in uA
2 & 3 unused Some are connected but uninteresting
4 Forced trigger Forced trigger start signals for TPC WFDs
5 - 7 unused Some are connected but uninteresting
8 muSCa Veto halo counter used to collimate after the muSC
9 muSC "mu" Hits above the threshold for muons in muSC
10 muSC "e" muSC above electron thresh. Note that this is #Muons + #electrons
11 DAQ deadtime Fraction of time spend not taking data
12 1kHz counter Counts from 0 to 10000 at 1kHz. Use this to normalize the other scalers

  • observe separator HV, zurban desktop: 3
  • Logbook entries:
    • the main logbook is the elog. Report there
      • significant changes and observations (make extra new elog entry)
      • at the end of a shift, the shift leader has to write a brief summary, e.g. shift goals, good runs and special
        shift events. (Category General / Type Shift Summary)
    • The shift run summary is on http://cheetah/mucap/ by clicking on the runnumber a specific run can be edited (the usual PW).
      • Flag the run quality as "bad" if there is reason to believe the run is bad.
      • Add any special short comment in the comment box.
      • update the information (reload the browser window to see the updated info)

Usual trouble procedures:

  • DAQ troubles
  • Beam troubles:
    • First check visual scaler
    • If muSC is low, check separator, beamline
    • Recently, SEP was unstable, readjust by hand (elog:626)
  • ePC troubles

  • Gas alarm: follow instructions:
  • hydrogen alarm: call Marat
  • CHUPS troubles: call Marat
  • DAQ problems
    • follow instructions: DAQ disaster recovery manual - not ready yet
    • call DAQ emergency number 5883 (Brendan, Fred)
  • ePC troubles: call Peter, Brendan, Genna
  • eSC troubles: call Brendan, Peter, Fred, Bernhard
  • mPC1 troubles: call Genna, Volodya
